2027 Wedding Trends We’re Loving: Slower Celebrations, Roaming Feasts and More Time Together
If there’s one thing shaping weddings in 2027, it’s this: couples want more time to actually enjoy them.
After months—sometimes years—of planning, nobody wants their wedding to disappear in a blur of strict timelines, formalities and being hurried from one thing to the next.
Instead, we’re seeing couples create slower, more personal celebrations centred around good food, beautiful places and proper time with their favourite people.
That might mean stretching the celebration across an entire weekend, choosing an Alpine Roaming Feast instead of a formal seated dinner, or sharing a carefully curated Pinterest board and asking us to help turn all those saved ideas into something that genuinely works.
As an event manager and caterer, I’m very much here for it.
Here are some of the 2027 wedding trends we’re loving at Lemon Pie Events—and a few ideas for making them your own.
1. Progressive dining: meet the Alpine Roaming Feast
Progressive dining is one of the biggest wedding food trends we expect to see in 2027—and it’s exactly what inspired our Alpine Roaming Feast.
Rather than stopping the celebration for one long, formal meal, food arrives in thoughtfully timed stages throughout the day and evening.
Your guests might begin around a beautifully styled antipasto and grazing table before enjoying handcrafted canapés over drinks. Sliders can appear next, followed later by generous dinner portions served in easy-to-enjoy roaming bowls. Dessert and late-night food can also be added, depending on how you want the evening to flow.
Nothing feels rushed, and your guests aren’t tied to their seats for hours. They can move, mingle, eat and enjoy the atmosphere while the food becomes part of the celebration.
Our Alpine Roaming Feast was created to bring together everything Lemon Pie does best: generous food, beautiful presentation, plenty of flavour and genuine hospitality.
Depending on the menu you choose, the feast might include:
Antipasto and grazing
Handcrafted canapés
Sliders and substantial savoury bites
Warm dinner portions and roaming bowls
Mini desserts
Late-night food for the dance floor crowd
Think slow-cooked beef cheek with parmesan potato mash, Greek lamb shoulder, apricot harissa chicken or pomegranate-baked salmon—alongside relaxed favourites such as sliders and beautifully made canapés.
It feels special without becoming stiff, abundant without being over the top, and relaxed without losing the sense of occasion.
The Alpine Roaming Feast works particularly well for:
Lodge, vineyard, marquee and private-property weddings
Celebrations with a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces
Couples who want more time for music, dancing and mingling
Weddings without a traditional reception timeline
Guests who may not all know one another
Anyone who loves beautiful food but doesn’t want a formal three-course dinner
Most importantly, it allows the wedding to keep moving—and gives you more freedom to enjoy it too.
The next step we're really excited about is taking the experience even further by pairing each stage of the evening with drinks—an Aperol Spritz Tower with arrival grazing, cocktails with canapés, Central Otago Pinot Noir with our braised beef cheeks, and Espresso Martinis to kick off the after party.
Expanding your wedding over multiple days is a wedding trend we’re seeing more and more.
2. Multi-day weddings and wedding weekends
Why try to squeeze every conversation, meal and celebration into a single day?
Multi-day weddings are becoming increasingly popular, especially when guests are travelling to Central Otago, Wānaka, Queenstown, Tekapo or elsewhere in the South Island.
Rather than putting all the pressure on one main event, couples are creating several relaxed opportunities to spend time together.
A wedding weekend might include:
Welcome drinks and a grazing table the evening before
A relaxed dinner as guests arrive
Breakfast or lunch while everyone gets ready
The main wedding celebration
A recovery brunch the following morning
Picnic boxes or takeaway treats for the trip home
Not every part needs to be a huge production. That’s really the beauty of it.
The welcome evening might simply be wine, shared food and a chance for everyone to meet. The recovery brunch could be good coffee, something delicious and plenty of stories from the night before.
The main wedding still feels incredibly special, but it no longer has to carry the entire weight of the celebration.
Lemon Pie can provide catering and event support across multiple days, helping each part feel connected while making sure the food remains varied, interesting and suited to the moment.

3. From Pinterest to party
Most brides have a Pinterest board. Often several.
You’ve probably saved the grazing tables, candlelit dinners, colour palettes, flowers, signage, table settings, late-night food and tiny details that make you think, “Yes—that’s how I want it to feel.”
Bring it all to us.
When we begin talking about your wedding, share your Pinterest boards, saved Instagram posts, screenshots and half-formed ideas. You don’t need to know exactly how everything will come together—that’s where I can help.
Part of good event planning is working out which ideas fit your venue, season, guest numbers and budget. We can take the feeling behind your inspiration and turn it into something beautiful, practical and personal to you.
Because Pinterest is wonderful for inspiration, but somebody still needs to work out where the food will be prepared, how guests will move through the space, what happens if the weather changes and whether those 500 tiny candles are actually allowed at the venue.
Let’s take it from Pinterest to party—keeping the magic while quietly sorting out the practical details behind it.
4. Relaxed luxury
Luxury in 2027 is less about formality and more about how a wedding feels.
It’s beautiful food appearing at exactly the right moment. It’s knowing your guests are warm, comfortable and well fed. It’s thoughtful details, quality ingredients and a calm team quietly managing everything in the background.
A roaming feast can feel every bit as premium as a traditional three-course dinner. The difference is that it creates a more social, relaxed experience.
The same idea applies to venues and styling. Couples are choosing private properties, luxury lodges, vineyards and beautiful rural settings, then bringing in the right people to create an experience around them.
The setting provides the magic. Good planning helps everything else fall into place.
5. Food that actually feels like you
Wedding menus are becoming much more personal.
That doesn’t mean every couple needs to invent an entirely new dish. It could be including a favourite flavour, serving something inspired by a special trip, adding a nostalgic comfort food or planning the menu around how you naturally love to host people.
We’re also seeing couples happily mix refined dishes with familiar favourites.
You might serve beautifully presented canapés during cocktail hour, followed by slow-cooked lamb, warm roaming bowls and late-night cheeseburger sliders.
That contrast is part of the fun.
Your wedding menu doesn’t have to be chosen simply because something feels traditionally “wedding-like”. It should be food you’re genuinely excited to eat—and that your guests will still be talking about the next day.
From plated meals to rustic shared plates - all wedding food should be personal.
6. Guest experience over unnecessary traditions
More couples are becoming selective about the wedding traditions they keep.
Instead of asking, “What are we supposed to do?”, they’re asking:
How do we want the day to feel?
What will make our guests feel welcome?
When do we actually want to eat?
How much time do we want for dancing?
Which traditions mean something to us?
What could we remove to make the day more relaxed?
This doesn’t mean losing the special moments. It means giving the right ones more room.
When your timeline isn’t crowded with traditions you don’t really care about, there’s more time for conversations, shared food, spontaneous speeches and those unexpected little moments that often become the best memories.
More and more couples are choosing guest experience over tradition, along with seasonal celebrations that work with the season.
7. Seasonal celebrations that work with the setting
We’re also loving weddings designed around their season and setting rather than fighting against them.
For an alpine or winter wedding, that might mean warming food, candlelight, layered textures, sheltered gathering spaces and a solid plan for changing weather.
For a summer vineyard wedding, it could mean a leisurely grazing hour, chilled drinks, fresh seasonal flavours and food appearing gradually as the temperature softens.
This is especially important for South Island weddings. A remote location can create an incredible backdrop, but access, power, kitchen facilities, weather, guest transport and accommodation all need to be considered early.
As your event management partner, I can help you look beyond the beautiful photos and make sure the less glamorous—but very important—details have been properly buttoned up too.
What will define weddings in 2027?
For me, the best 2027 wedding trends aren’t really about colours, flowers or the shape of the tables.
They’re about creating more space.
More time to talk. More opportunities to eat together. More freedom to move around. More personality. And less pressure to fit everything into a traditional wedding-day formula.
The Alpine Roaming Feast, multi-day wedding catering and relaxed luxury all support the same idea: your wedding shouldn’t feel like a production you need to race through. It should feel like a celebration you’re actually part of.
If you’re planning a wedding in Central Otago, Wānaka, Queenstown, Tekapo or elsewhere in the South Island, I’d love to hear what you’re dreaming up.
Send me your Pinterest board, your venue ideas, your must-have foods and even the bits you haven’t quite worked out yet. Together, we can create a celebration that feels generous, beautifully considered and completely yours.
From one wonderful day to an entire wedding weekend, Lemon Pie can support you with catering, mobile bar service and practical event management—bringing all the moving parts together while leaving plenty of room for the magic.
